While some of that is tax-free (BAS, BAH), everything else is subject to state/federal taxes. As an ENS, depending on locality, you'll be making approximately $50,000 ($3477/month, BAS ~$280/month, Career Sea Pay $100/mo) without BAH (depends on your location). 3 section duty (24 hours on the ship every 3rd day) and working Monday-Friday in-port for upwards of 8-14 hour days - none of which includes underway periods and deployments. There are a variety of reasons why people ultimately choose not to stay, but a lot of it could be boiled down the operational tempo of a ship, (unsupportive and/or hostile) chain of commands, quality of life to include starting a family, higher education, better job opportunities, and stability.ĭon't let anyone tell you otherwise, but being a SWO is hard - sometimes infuriatingly difficult.
